4 for 4!!

We had a dentist appointment today for all four boys. I am proud to say that all four boys are still cavity free! I don't know where they get their teeth, its definitely not from me or daddy, we both have horrible teeth. The mailman maybe! It doesn't matter to me, as long as I don't have to pay to get cavities filled, I don't care!
Jaxson does have some more teeth coming in. Because he's never eaten by mouth, his teeth come in very slow. Right now my 4 year old has his 4 front teeth, and his 4 back molars, that's it. But he said he could feel both of his eye teeth, so maybe more are coming. I think we have a new night nurse coming tonight. It will be weird, since the guy never came out and oriented, he doesn't even know Jax. We'll see how it goes.
I had a bit of a flashback and horrible realization today. I was watching celebrity rehab (because Dr. Drew is so very fine) and they were talking about methadone. How some people get addicted to the methadone that is supposed to be weaning them off their drugs. It made me think of Jax, and the fact that he was an addict at one time. Of course not on illegal drugs, and not of his own doing, but its so sad to think of my infant addicted. He was on fentenal and versed for almost 4 months straight, so he had severe withdrawals. He came home on a crazy drug schedule. Methadone and ativan weans. Alternating between the two every two hours, and every other day lowering one of the meds doses a little, to get him off. It was a horrific schedule, one were my notebook became my best friend.

So sad what our brave hero's go through!!

First, it is amazing that you have 4 kids and not a cavity among them - way to go. Second, so sorry to hear that Jax went through that. It is really amazing at how strong he is.

YAY for no cavities!!! This is always a great thing!

Your thoughts on Jax being on so many drugs and going though withdrawls brought me back to those days with Gavin too. My sister and I were just talking about how much Gavin was on to keep him down when he was intubated for so long. The doctors kept telling us that Gavin was on enough medication to put a horse out for a couple of days and yet, Gavin still managed to wake up often! It took such a long time for Gavin to get off the meds. They wouldn't let us go home until he was off the meds completely and this is probably why he ended up having a stroke, because they kept increasing his dieuretics that he was on while he was in the hospital getting off the drugs...which ended up being the cause of his stroke. UGH!

It's amazing to think that our boys are still here after all that they have been through!

Give your miracle a kiss from me! Love and Hugs!!!

Four sets of healthy teeth is amazing! Great job!

I've always said my infant daughter was on more drugs than I have ever been on in my 30 plus years of life! Pretty sad when you think about it. Luckily, Marissa didn't deal with bad withdrawals but I am fearful for her next surgery. I've heard that the worst part of the recovery is the withdrawals from the heavy drugs they will have her on. Ugh.

Hugs and prayers to you and Jax!

Hon I read what you said about your baby being an "addict" and I wanted to tell you that this is completely incorrect. There are two different medical terms with different definitions--"addiction" and "Physical dependence". Anyone who takes an opioid drug for more than 1-2 weeks on a regular basis will develop a physical dependence, meaning they must be weaned off in order to avoid abstinence syndrome effects. However, this is NOT the same as being "addicted". Addiction involves not just physical dependence, but also a series of behaviors of which infants are incapable, including continued use despite harm, cravings, taking more than prescribed, and so on. Most people who are dependent on Rx opioids do NOT meet the definition of "addict", and most assuredly your dear baby was NOt an addict, though he WAS physically dependent.

Actually, many medications have a withdrawal syndrome if stopped abruptly, not just opiates--antidepressants, tranquilizers, anti psychotics, etc--and most people on medications for chronic conditions, like insulin, epilepsy drugs, etc--would be very ill indeed if their meds were abruptly discontinued--but that does not make them addicts.

I just wanted to let you know this and hope it does bring you some comfort.

Could your boys come over and teach my kids the finer points of brushing teeth? We never seem to make it out of the dentist office cavity free!

I'm sure it must feel overwhelming at times to think of all sweet Jax has been through. He really is a hero.

How interesting about Jax's teeth growing slowing since he's not eating...I only say that since Dillon was delayed as well & only eating puree's, makes me wonder??
