Of course there's Jaxson who thinks liquid goes in the lungs instead of the belly. He is still holding his own, requiring lots of O2, sounds like a bull dog. I'm going to pull out my pounder and do some good ole CPT on that boy. Tomorrow we go in for an upper GI to check the nissen. Won't even think about if that puppy is undone again. The 24th we go to dr. lungs and discuss things. The "T" word has been mentioned (trach). But I'm interested, for all you trach moms out there. Does having a trach prevent them from aspirating?
Then last night Carter comes upstairs clutching his throat and telling me he swallowed a magnetix. Great, leave it to that boy. So we were in kids care last night making sure that it isn't in the throat. Nope, it was in the belly.
Mondo went to reach for his shirt this morning, heard a pop in his neck, and hasn't been able to move since. Of course I think nothing of it and make him get dressed and go to school. Then the school calls me saying that he was in tremendous pain. So as I'm ready to take him to the doc. The school calls again saying that Carter says he's going to throw up. AAhh, just the thing we don't want when we swallow a big magnet ball, can we say bowel obstruction? So I go back to the school, pick Carter up and off we go to the doctor.
Thankfully the magnetix is still not causing harm, Mondo is off to physical therapy for his neck, and I'm finally on my way home.
Even dad's getting into things. His foot just out of the blue swelled up to twice its size. No injury, nothing. So daddy can't walk without crutches, he's off to the doctor tomorrow to figure that one out.
Seriously, if I was not here, the house would be in chaos (sorry honey, I love you, but you know its true) Mommy's make the world go round, make the boo boo's better, and make killer chocolate chip cookies. I think I'm going to leave everyone here and go to California myself. A great mommy vacation!

Mommies definitely make sure everything is going smoothly.....even if things aren't going so very smoothly! You do deserve a Mommy vacation! Whew!

Also, when you see the pulmonologist ask about a nebulizer, like Pulmicort, that has a steroid in it. Gavin gets this once a day. He also gets Xopenex and Atrovent twice a day. I really feel that this is what has kept Gavin as healthy as he is! The cardiologist says that Gavin should not be doing this well because of his significant Mitral valve leak that he has, but he is doing great! They thought that he would have been in for another surgery by now, but he hasn't needed to. He's done so well cardiac wise since we strted these nebs on him. His lungs were always described as "crap" too, but now they look quite good. He was very close to getting a trach as well and now he doesn't even need oxygen! I pray that nebs will be an answer to Jaxson's lung issues too! They are a pain to do, but much better than the alternative!
Holy moly woman - when it rains it POURS! Do you have a padded suit to wear around so YOU don't get hurt!!

Oh my goodness - seriously how much more does your family think you can do? Sounds like a pretty busy day! Aren't you supposed to be at home having quality Jaxson and Mommy time while three kids are in school? So much for a break! You really do need a mommy only vacation.......
ReplyDeleteSeriously - what is it with kids and swallowing things? Ashleigh's penny has passed and I hope she learned a valuable lesson - like don't put things down your throat!!!! I hope Carter's marble passes without any problems. Maybe you could hang him on the fridge to teach him a lesson - hee!hee! Probably need a few more magnetix but it sounds like a funny idea. I think I am tired.....

There's a bit of guidelines, but basically "famous" people donate their airline miles to give to sick kids and families needing to travel. I JUST found out about this from the Nurse Practitioner in the Cardiology clinic in Boston.

Also, if you do get sent to Boston soon the Yawkey Family Inn is a WONDERFUL place to stay. We actually stayed at the Devon Nicole House which is separate, but ran by the same people. It's part of the hospital and only $30.00/night! I think most of the hotels in the area are around $150.00-$200.00/night. Just because of the area the hospital is in. Anyway... I hope those things help you out a bit! I know you have to fill out a 1 page application for either of those houses and they are pretty accomodating.

I feel you pain. I don't have much trach advise, that's one issue we've never dealt with but I know you'll get all the info and make the best possible decision for Jax.

ReplyDeleteYou are super mommy!!! We have the same issue with fluid going into Malachi's lungs and they are talking with us about a g-tube. Im not sure about a trach and if that would help. They also have something called Vita stim (i think) that they use on elderly people to strengthen the muscles in the neck (for swallowing purposes) and they are starting to do it on kids. Malachi will be getting that soon to see if we can avoid a g-tube. Something to look into. Hugs!!!

ReplyDeleteI read your blog almost daily and wanted to help answer your question about trachs and aspiration. I am speech therapist and work with kids and adults with trachs.
Kids can still aspirate with trachs, on their secretions and food/liquid. Trachs can either be cuffed or uncuffed and that means that a little cushion can be inflated to completely close off the upper airway and the child just breaths through the trach hole. If the cuff is deflated then the child can breath out some through the mouth. But either way, cuffed or uncuffed, a child can aspirate, which is unfortunate. People with trachs are more likely to silently aspirate as well. I would assume the chances are less with a trach but still there. I hope this helps a little! I'll be praying for you all!!
