He's done. It took them about 45 minutes longer than they said. We are now waiting in the PICU waiting room for him to get settled. The surgeon said that his airway below his vocal cords was VERY narrow. It can be common in DS kids, but its probably from so many traumatic intubations. He said that in the future he may need a huge surgery were they take cartlidge and fix that area. But we won't know if he needs that until he is ready to be decannulated. Not for a few years at least.

ReplyDeleteWonderful news.. seems like it was pretty quick. Waiting it the worst you want to be with your baby and they say wait. Soon you will be able to snuggle that sweet boy... can't wait to see pics. Huggles and lots of love to you both. Good job Jaxson, you sure are one strong warrior!! :D
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear that he came through okay. Now does that narrow airway mean that the trach still won't solve all of his breathing issues or does it mean that now the narrow airway won't be an issue??? Can;t wait to hear more after you see him!! Give him hugs from ALL of us!!

ReplyDeleteIf he grows, he may or may not need that surgery. I would say, wait, pray, and cross that bridge when you get to it. The doctor had planned a laryngeotracheoplasty, which I assume is what you are talking about, for my son, Doah, but while awaiting the surgery, Doah removed his own trach tube (self-decanulation?), the nursing staff did not notice until morning when the stoma had closed, and since Doah was still breathing, the doc decided to do no surgery. We had 3 apneic episodes with cardiac arrest, though, while waiting for his airway to grow just a bit more. We did not realize that air conditioning was drying it out just enough to close off the little air space that he had. Ultimately, we got it right, he grew, no need for more surgery in that area (other stuff, though, did require surgery), and in one month he will celebrate his big 3-0 birthday. I assume that doctors know far more today than they did 30 years ago when my Doah was given "no chance to live." He showed them!! I will pray that your little Jaxson beats the odds on his surgery, and I will put him on the prayer list on my blog.
