As you can see, Tanner was less than thrilled to go back to school today. I feel the same. This is way to early to be going back to school. I hate it, not only are my sisters still in town, and I'm having to run around and get school supplies. It makes me feel like summer is over. And I'm not ready for it to be over. We still have two small trips planned.
Ugh. And then Tanner had a complete meltdown. I had to drag him to the car. I gave him his anxiety pill, because I saw that he was going to meltdown. But it didn't help. Mondo had to pull him out of the backseat for me when we got to school. And then when we dropped Mondo off, he wouldn't go in with his class. I was carrying Jax, sweating profusely, utterly embarassed by my kid, who no one knows is autistic. I left him outside and went to find his resource teacher. We were chasing each other around. I finally got him inside the school, screaming bloody murder. Then I saw his resource teacher running down the hall. She heard him. She has been so amazing with him. She's the only reason he hasn't been pulled out of this school yet. So I left him with her, screaming in the hall.
I am completely at my whits end. I can't do this all year. I'm thinking he needs to be pulled out of a regular classroom. Now its just where do I put him? The autism school has a huge waiting list. I think the only thing is a cluster class through the school district. I do know another autistic child in one of those. Its a smaller class and all special needs kids. I mean, is any kid in his class going to like him when they see him throwing a fit? Its just the right ammo for kids to tease him.
I'm telling you, I'm about two seconds away from a nervous breakdown. I go to my ped today to discuss stuff thats going on with Jax, the fact that we still haven't heard from Boston. Now I get to bring up my autistic son and were to put him in school.
Happy Monday everyone.
Sorry to read you're having a "Monday". I just saw Jax in Paul Cardall's video - http://mytricuspidatresia.blogspot.com/ - so sweet.
ReplyDeletei am so sorry, I wish there was somrthing I could do to help you. I haope your day gets better. Hang in there. Love Ya.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to hear of a rough day...getting back in the swing of things is really tough, and even tougher when your children are having a hard time too...I'm sure once he is in routine, it will get a little bit better...wish I lived closer to help you out! Hope tomorrow goes smoother....:) Hugs to you!
ReplyDeleteI hate those kinds of days!!! What a way to start your week! I'm so sorry!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe your boys started school today! Do they get other breaks during the school year, besides Christmas and Spring Break, or do they just go to school more than most schools? Our boys still have a month off from school!
Does Carter start later?...I was just wondering since he wasn't in the picture. I pray that your son starts handling school better...this would break my heart and it must be so frustruating for you! Maybe you should try this other school or class? I wonder if it would make him happier to go? Poor boy and poor Momma!
Praying that the peds visit goes well! Hang in there Lacey! I'll be praying! HUGS!!!
(((((((Lacey)))))))) I wish I had good words of advice, but I don't. Just a virtual hug and a listening ear. Hang in there.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all...it is way too early to go back to school. Our kids go back Aug. 25th. I remember when we didn't go back until after labor day.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry you had such a tough time today. From a teachers point of view, this happens quite often at our school. I had two runners last year and it was always most difficult after long breaks. That is wonderful that you have a great resource teacher that can help out. Maybe you can work out a procedure that feels less scary for him. Good luck.
Lacey, I am sorry you're Monday isn't going so smooth. There's nothing worse than trying to get everyone back on schedule. I truly hope your week gets better.
ReplyDeleteOh man ..... I am sorry that the day started out so poorly. I hope it improves. You definately have a lot on your plate!
ReplyDeleteOh Lacey, that stinks. I thought us going back to school August 13th was early. Poor Tanner, do you do social stories with him? They have been a life saver for Cooper. Let me know and I'll help any way I can!
ReplyDeleteI just saw your post to me. We go to CHOC. :)
ReplyDeleteIs there anyone who can help out with Jax tomorrow morning so you can focus on Tanner only??? I felt stressed for you just reading your story. I am not an autism expert at all but from what I have heard, it sounds like things need to be very planned and calm in getting him to his class. You are ALWAYS on my mind and hopefully, very soon, in my eyesight. I along with many others here in blogland wish SOOO much that I were close enough to help you out...even just a little!!! Hang in there my treasured friend!!
ReplyDeleteI'm telling everyone now that Lily is in a cluster class (and loves it!) Do what is best for Tanner!! I love those kids in Lily's class. They are all accepting of each other. If one has a melt down or does something wrong they will call it like it is and go on with their work. The teachers are on top of it, "yep kids Lily's having a problem get back to work." There is a great advantage from having a teacher, two aides, and 15 students! Lily's class has buddies that come in and help the kids. Both sets of kids love it! Lily's class serves lunch just like all the other classes, they participate in the exercise program just like everyone else, they participate in all the assembly's. BUT, everything is catered to their needs. You can change your IEP several times a year until you find something that works for your child. Try something else if what you are doing right now isn't working. If that doesn't work, try something else. Utah Parent Center is a GREAT resource as well for any questions concerning IEP's.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear you're having such a bad day. I hope the chat with the doctor is helpful and that you find the best school option for Tanner.
ReplyDeleteDo you have any good respite services around your area? It sounds like YOU need a break.
oh my gosh Lacey! I don't know how you do it - honestly
ReplyDeleteLacey, we really like CHOC. I know for a fact that my daughter would not be alive if she had been at other nearby hospitals. They literally saved her life in the OR. Our doctors are AMAZING. I love every one of them (except neuro, and we see a private neuro elsewhere).
ReplyDeleteWe definately have to meet up when you are here in August! Are you doing Disney, or ?? Let me know!!
Oh I am so sorry you had a bad Monday - hopefully Tuesday will be better. Maybe it will be better tomorrow because he will have met his teacher. Where is Carter in the picture - did he go back today too?
ReplyDeleteI don't know how you do everything - you could so easily say this is too much - yet you just keep going and going. Your kids are so lucky to have you!!
Praying that tomorrow you will get some answers from the pediatrician - and that drop off at school will go much smoother!!
No words of wisdom from me . I stand in awe of you daily. Hang in there. (not that you could let go)Love ya!
ReplyDeleteLacey, please remember to take care of yourself! Great big giant virtual hugs!!!!
ReplyDeleteWow! I cannot believe you are back in school aleady. What a shame. Sorry to hear that you had a trying day. Hope the week gets better.
ReplyDeleteYEAH, that is way too early for school!
ReplyDeleteI'm really disapointed in Boston...that sucks! So sorry lacey!
Ugh it really is tooo early to go back to school....I thought Aug. 17was early for here but you guys got us beat by alot.....
ReplyDeleteI can NOT stand the thoughts of summer being gone....It truly doesn't feel like we've had summer. I do love the fall but I can barely muddle my way through winter...UGH
Bring on next spring/summer! LOL
My friend(her son is a teen) and my neighbor(Her son is 10) fight the same darn battle with their little boys both Autistic as well.
My friends little boy is also ADHD and has Aspergers along with the Autism. She really struggles with all aspects of his life. She did move him to a local christian private school 2 years ago which has helped "somewhat"..Smaller classrooms/more attention/more understanding ect. PLUS he's been on a new med. Not sure what its called but its a patch. Both the neighbors little boy and my friends little boy wear it. Compared to what they were prior to the patch we have seen LOTS of improvement. Not perfect mind you and still loads of problems but nothing compared to without the patch....
I'm anxious to hear what your docs going to try. Lets pray it works wonders! :0)
Hope your Tuesday and now Wednesday goes much smoother..
Hugs,
Trina and Jophie
My daughter has both Down syndrome and autism. Down syndrome is easy. Autism sucks. As far as school, do what you feel is best. Sometimes it is so hard to know that, though! We ended up putting Kayla in a private special needs school. Theoretically, I'm all for inclusion and all that, but where I live it just wouldn't work. The special needs school is really the only appropriate option for US.
